Quick facts

Race/Class: Saiyan monk · Party: The FAM · People: Saiyans · Home: Salt Desert · Guardian: Nappa · Partner: Cabba · Status: Alive (as of C2 Session 83)

Ellery is a Saiyan monk with a prehensile tail, a huge appetite and a habit of solving problems by punching them. She left her clan without telling anyone, went looking for the legendary Saiyan Kakarot, and found a family in The FAM instead.

Overview

Ellery came to the Saline Coast as an outsider; one tavern patron declared her tail “not of God.” She is the party’s front-line fighter and the one most often knocked flat, and she can sense the energy of other powerful beings across great distances. Her story runs through her people: Prince Vegeta, who sent for her; Nappa, who raised her; her friends Kale and Caulifla; and Cabba, her best friend, whom she spent much of the campaign trying to rescue. Under an eclipse or a false moon she turns into a giant Ozaroo.

History

The Saline Coast (Sessions 1–13)

Ellery passed through customs with ease and was in the crowd when the zoo wolves escaped. She was knocked out in that first fight and revived by Kip. At the Mercenary’s Rest she revealed her Saiyan heritage and her tail. When the half-orc Yorn was left dying after Wilbur botched a mercy kill, Ellery put him out of his misery.

The Saiyan Caulifla found her while she recovered from the bandit fight. Sent by “their prince” to bring Ellery home, Caulifla mocked her for running away and for being weak. Ellery said she meant to find the Saiyan Kakarot to prove her strength, and Caulifla decided to race her to it. Kip later showed her a picture on the wall of the Cackler Barrel of a small figure with spiky black hair and a monkey tail, which tied Kakarot to The Cacklers.

At the masquerade ball a fortune teller drew three cards for her: the Chariot (victory through willpower, but beware being “swept away by the very force that propels” her), the Devil (chains of desire or fear she must break) and the Sun in partial eclipse (growth and a radiant victory). She ate chocolate truffles at Eldon Reed’s poker game and lifted his book on control and power. During the prison fight she deflected a guard’s spear into his comrade. At Salt Spun Manor she was caught trying to quietly take down a guard and fled when Wilbur told her to run. Leaving the city, she jumped out a window into a wagon to dodge the guards and later posed as an old woman carrying Kip as a baby.

Home, and the Bloodhowler (Sessions 14–20)

On the road Ellery admitted she had never been with anyone romantically. On a night watch she told Nelda she was nervous about going home, because she had left without telling anyone and felt nobody would care she was gone. After the first fight with the Bloodhowler, the party retreated to her clan. Vegeta confronted her for her absence and challenged her to a sparring match. She lost but earned his respect. He gave her a crescent-shaped yellow item to use only as a last resort and tasked her with finding Kakarot. The clan offered no other help. That night Ellery comforted Nelda over Squeebles’ death and shared her own insecurities about her social skills. She was knocked out again in the battle at the Warhorde Clan camp.

Ozaroo, the Whisper and the In-Between (Sessions 27–32)

At the closing ceremonies the daytime fireworks made a false eclipse, and Ellery turned into a giant, raging ape. Escher sliced off her tail and she reverted, unconscious. Soon after, The Whisper told her and Escher he was the last of his kind, wiped out by a tyrant named Frieza, the same tyrant who destroyed Ellery’s home planet. He offered to teach her about her powers in exchange for help against Frieza, and she accepted.

When Wilbur was killed, Ellery called Sylas Riverstride for help and went into The In-Between to save him. To pay the skeletal gambler she gave up her memories of, and the very concept of, Saiyan Pride. Atop the tower she tried to tackle Wilbur out of the ring of green fire and was thrown back. She then unleashed a massive beam of purple lightning that blasted through the Bloodhowler, destroyed the lightning rod powering his ritual and blew a hole in the tower wall. Back in the world, she took to carrying the sleeping Arghen over her shoulder, and one morning woke to find her tail had fully grown back.

At sea (Sessions 33–43)

Ellery clung to the stolen chest as the gold dragon tried to fly off with it and blasted him at point-blank range until his roar banished her to a harmless demiplane. Hangry afterward, she argued with Kellem Stormforge and later confronted him when he blamed her for revealing his name to the VTC. She asked Nelda to pierce her nose so people would stop seeing her as a child, and told Nelda she had been lied to: she was told a meteor destroyed her planet when she was five, but had learned it was destroyed by an evil person. She knocked out a tall elf with one punch in the ship’s fighting pit, sparred with an invisible Escher (to her frustration), and kicked an aboleth in the eye to escape its grip. Sigzil showed her stars vanishing from the constellations, and she connected it to Frieza. In Bellyport she held a very drunk Wilbur like a baby while he worked through his death. In Buttermere she and Nelda drove VTC agents off the ship, and Ellery warned them never to call her a “bitch” again. She lost an arm-wrestling match to Nelda and sensed the dragon’s energy to the south.

The Saline Coast again, and Green Hollow (Sessions 44–58)

Ellery confided in Nelda about her crush on Prince Vegeta and worried about their age gap. Nappa called to warn her that Kale was angry and coming to fight her. A journalist judged her love of “smut books.” She chased the VTC necromancer across the city at a sprint and sensed a giant, pulsing wall of energy to the south. On the road to Green Hollow she found Kale exhausted in a hilltop ruin. At the mention of Caulifla, Kale lost control and transformed, and the party had to fight her down.

In Green Hollow, Ellery kidnapped and tied up one of Sawyer Elmheart’s gardeners for information, grappled Sawyer himself in the tavern fight (and was left holding only his severed left hand when time glitched), fought through the Temple of Cyrollellee and killed the cultist Tibbon. In Brinewick Hollow she scouted Judge Vellum’s estate while invisible. She wrote Kip a handwritten guide on processing his experience with death, and arrived in Veshka’s cave just in time to help him kill the enchantress.

North City (Sessions 59–71)

Ellery argued with Nelda in the Underdark, wanting to push on to the Cell Games while Nelda mourned her father. A beholder put her to sleep and flung her into a river. In North City she tracked Vegeta’s energy to the Cackler Barrel, where the Whisper revealed himself as a mind flayer and accused Vegeta of executing his people. Bulma teleported everyone out of the city, and Ellery fought Vegeta in the fields, insisting she only wanted to knock him out. Afterward Vegeta told her he had spared her and Kale as infants because Nappa had a “soft heart.”

On a run through the warehouse district Ellery met Goku and Vegeta just as the Whisper arrived holding the abducted Gohan. The Whisper shattered the crescent artifact he had stolen from her bag, and Ellery, Goku, Vegeta and Gohan all became rampaging Ozaroo. Sophie held Ellery in place with a spell while the others fought the apes. She and Nelda later reconciled under the moonlight and named themselves a “found family.”

Before Vegeta left for Namek he told Ellery he loved her like family and was proud of how she had grown. During a game of truth or dare she had her first kiss, with the dwarf Reginald. She confessed to Nelda that she regretted a missed romantic chance with Cabba and feared the VTC had him. During the Cell Games she abandoned the party for Bulma’s buffet.

Coghaven and Cabba (Sessions 72–80)

Ellery killed the toll-dragon in the Underdark by leaping from a rock with a flying kick, riding it into the ground. Meditating, she caught a faint trickle of Cabba’s energy, had a vision of him being shocked in his pod, and sent him a message promising she was coming. Convinced he was powering Coghaven’s machine, she snuck out one night to get herself captured and trade places with him. Nelda caught her and reminded her that she didn’t have to do everything alone, the same advice Ellery had given Escher.

Ellery threw Wilbur’s smoke device into the Chancellor’s council chamber and fought through the forge, where a blow forced her tail back out of her body. She hauled open a red-hot metal door with her bare hands. Against Dr. Wheelo, the CabbAutomaton, a mechanical copy of Cabba, used Cabba’s own moves against her and nearly killed her, until the real Cabba, freed, struck it and told it to step away from her. Cabba had torn off his own tail to get to her. On the new airship he told her he was proud of her as a Saiyan warrior and that if her feelings were unchanged she need only say one word. Ellery kissed him while Kip threw confetti, and Cabba told her he loved her completely.

Khalor (Sessions 81–83)

Wilbur and Nelda grilled Cabba about his intentions toward her. At the gallows Ellery searched for the missing Arghen, crossed a bridge and fired a Galick Gun at Khalor. The dragon breathed fire on her back and banished her to a demiplane again; when she reappeared inside Masha’s wall of fire, he was gone with Arghen.

Personality

Ellery is blunt, physical and impatient, with little patience for social niceties she never learned. Underneath she worries that she is unwanted, uneducated or seen as a child. She is fiercely loyal and tends to take the hardest job on herself.

Relationships

  • Nelda Valedriss: Her closest friend in the party; the two fought, made up and call each other found family.
  • Cabba: Her best friend, then her love.
  • Prince Vegeta: Her prince, crush and sparring partner, who at last told her he was proud of her.
  • Nappa: Her guardian.
  • Kale and Caulifla: Fellow Saiyans; Kale is a friend, Caulifla a rival.
  • Wilbur Crushmore: His farewell letter told her to look to the future and not be defined by her past.
