On the road, Nelda woke everyone with her bagpipes, which led to a conversation about romance. Ellery admitted she had never been with anyone. Nelda talked about a past love and explained that she and her former partner had wanted different things. Kip asked innocent but blunt questions, and Nelda shared her cynical view of marriage as a construct of modern slavery, making for an awkward and funny exchange.
The mood shifted when Wilbur said he believed Eldon Reed had threatened his family, the Warhorde Clan, and urged the group to travel faster. A mysterious foul smell seemed to be coming from Kip, and it later turned out to be a prestidigitation trick. Kip stopped at a small shrine to pray and received a cryptic vision warning that “the stars aren’t right,” and that he must follow his heart and compassion as his true guide rather than the flawed laws of men.
A band of goblins ambushed the group, demanding their “shiny things.” The party won the fight, with Nelda landing the final, decisive blow. Steve survived, a small comfort after the sudden and brutal attack.
