The attempt to question Tobias Bigsby in the Saline Coast prison went wrong when the Prison Captain arrived, and a violent fight broke out. Wilbur used his flight to attack one guard, while Ellery deflected another guard’s spear so that it struck and killed his comrade. Several guards died in the chaos and the prisoners began demanding to be let out. Wilbur insisted Bigsby was innocent, but Ellery worried that not all the prisoners were, especially once every one of them started claiming innocence.
Moved by their pleas, Kip took the prison keys and started unlocking cells, then handed the keys to a prisoner named Dave to free the rest. Bigsby, now free, said he had a safe place to go and arranged to meet the group at Beachside Books in twelve hours to tell them what he knew. While the others got ready to leave, Wilbur decided to sneak into the Salt Spun Manor, the mayor’s residence, alone to look into Mayor Windrider’s mysterious illness.
Inside, Wilbur found the frail and delirious mayor. She spoke in fragments about “the numbers” being wrong and how the “stars are not right.” She said that two people, Orin and a kind woman named Lyla, gave her strange drinks that burned. For a moment her eyes sharpened, and she grabbed Wilbur’s collar and begged for help before passing out. As Wilbur considered his next move, his homunculus servant warned him that someone was coming.
