Quick facts

Campaign: Campaign 2 · Session: 10 of 83 · Arc: The Festival Conspiracy · Where: Rusty Anchor, Saline Coast

The group found themselves in a tense heads-up poker game with Eldon Reed. Reed offered a smoke, which Wilbur and Nelda accepted. Kip, distressed, handed Nelda a pamphlet on quitting smoking, which she promptly dropped. Ellery accepted some chocolate truffles that reminded her of ones from a previous ball. Things turned serious when Reed accused Wilbur of killing his men. Wilbur deflected with talk of half-orc culture and his last name, Crushmore. Reed expressed contempt for how Mayor Windrider was letting the city fall to ruin, hinting at a larger power struggle.

Reed then revealed why he had called the meeting. He wanted back items from a “revenue source” that had been “extinguished,” which he believed the group had, and he asked Wilbur to join forces with him. Wilbur declined. Reed told him to leave town before the festival got more dangerous and made a veiled threat against Wilbur’s Warhorde Clan if he kept investigating. As Wilbur stepped out into the adjoining tavern, a large half-orc with a greataxe attacked him and the party. The half-orc died, and the group was thrown out of the establishment.

Outside, they compared notes. Nelda asked Ellery what she had seen during the game, and Ellery revealed she had taken a book on control and power with notes inside. Kip tried to teach Ellery some social graces by encouraging her to compliment Nelda’s hair and appearance. They then ran into guards from the local prison, Murtog and Mullroy. Nelda flirted her way into getting herself and Wilbur inside the prison to speak with Tobias Bigsby. Partway through their talk with Bigsby, the chief walked in and demanded to know what was going on.
