At the Salt Spun Manor, Wilbur overheard Lyla and Orin giving Mayor Windrider a “medicine” that caused her pain. They talked about planting documents for Captain Eric Stormshield to find and about abandoning the mayor once the election was over. Realizing she was in danger, Wilbur put her in his bag of holding, set the room on fire using flammable items and a fire bolt, and flew out the window. His flight gave out about a hundred feet later and he plummeted into a field outside the manor walls.
Meanwhile Ellery and Kip were dealing with the guards outside. Ellery tried to quietly take down a guard but was spotted, leading to a standoff. Wilbur sent her a telepathic message telling her to run, and she broke away while Kip scrambled over a gate to safety. Wilbur, on his own, found a nearby farmhouse and convinced the owner, Eugene, to sell him his old donkey, Steve, and a cart for twenty gold, so he could carry the unconscious mayor back into the city.
Guards stopped Wilbur on the way back. He bribed one with ten gold to avoid having the cart searched, with the mayor hidden under a blanket. He rejoined the group at the Mercenary’s Rest and revealed the kidnapped mayor, explaining that Lyla and Orin had been poisoning her. Their names and faces were now plastered across the newspaper for the prison break. Fugitives and deep in the city’s corruption, they turned to the tavern’s owner, Bran, for help finding a healer they could trust.
