The party found the Saline Coast caught up in a heated mayoral race between Nelda’s estranged father, Thalorian, and their ally Catman. At the Mercenary’s Rest, a dejected Catman admitted he was trailing in the polls, thanks to the Velvet Truffle Company’s influence and public apathy about his opponent’s corruption. Hoping to save the election and the city before The Cell Games, the party agreed to help his campaign by exposing the link between Thalorian and the company’s archmage, Lazra Vant. Escher took an aggressive approach to the smear campaign, disguising himself as Nelda’s father and committing public vandalism and harassment against the local merfolk to wreck the candidate’s reputation.
While the group coordinated, Escher secretly went to the Pink Salt Pavilion to meet Silk. He was paid for his previous work with platinum bars and a special magic blade called the Silencer’s Verdict. He was also offered a “blackout job” with a massive payout of 250,000 gold: assassinate Capsule Corp CEO Bulma Briefs. Escher accepted and kept it from his companions. Meanwhile, Nelda reached her younger brother, Eldric, by messenger bird. They met at a local mural, where she learned that Velvet Truffle Company guards had beaten him after catching him going through their father’s desk. Nelda arranged for his eventual safety while the group prepared to break into the family estate for incriminating documents.
The party split to handle several priorities at once. Ellery went to the sewers to consult The Whisper about the journey to North City. Kip and Alana, with Wilbur, traveled to a secluded hut on the coast to seek a magical annulment from a reclusive enchantress. As they approached, they saw an unnaturally fast shadow move behind the glass. The door creaked open to reveal a figure with spindly fingers, and the enchantress greeted them with an odd question about whether things were “wet.”
