After interrogating the halfling Pella, Escher and Wilbur planned to ambush Judge Vellum at a midnight shipment drop at a remote crossroads.
Under cover of night, Wilbur used a magical disguise to impersonate Pella while Escher hid in the trees near the drop. When the Judge arrived and started inspecting the cabbage crates, Escher used a spectral hand to seize his throat and drove a poisoned dagger into his heart. To hide their involvement, they staged the scene as a violent dispute over money. They killed the real Pella with a concealed crossbow and left a forged letter from Sawyer to suggest betrayal from within. As they finished, a massive bird-like creature, The Gnoloo, descended from the sky, looked over the bodies, and flew off with the entire wagon of ghost petals.
The party regrouped at the crossroads and set out for the Saline Coast, taking Alana, Broul, and Arghen with them. At an inn halfway there, a new device called a radio crackled with a broadcast from a being calling itself Perfect Cell. He announced a tournament, The Cell Games, to be held at the Coliseum in North City in ten days, and threatened to destroy the planet unless the world’s champions could beat him in combat. (The Cacklers’ side of this story is told in C1.5 Chapter 02.) The party reached the Saline Coast with eight days left, debating whether to deal with Kip’s legal matters first or the survival of the world.
