Campaign: Campaign 2 · Session: 82 of 83 · Arc: The Gallows · Where: Saline Coast, the festival square

The festival square erupted into chaos as the crowd fled from the dragons that had appeared in the middle of the Saline Coast. Beyond Masha’s dragon, the VTC executioner, Daask Bruiser, whipped out an axe and a hook on a long chain. Khalor’s weakening breath washed over Kip and Wilbur. It did them no harm, but it drained their strength for the next minute. Khalor then turned his Dream Harvest on Nelda and Wilbur, battering their minds and leaving both of them heavy with a lethargy they couldn’t shake. Masha reappeared high in the air directly in front of Khalor, who greeted her with “welcome back” and pummeled her on the way down. Her shield spell stopped the first blow but cracked under the last one. As she plunged headfirst toward the docks, a cushion of magic caught her just before she hit. Masha landed, looked at Wilbur, and told him he was “too hot to die this quick.”

The rescue of Catman from the gallows went just as badly. Catman lay prone and restrained, insisting the party leave him to die, while Daask, the gnoll who had captured him, stood nearby. Catman threw something carrying his scent into the corner to throw the gnoll off, and Daask swallowed it whole. Then Catman dropped his invisibility and cast mirror image, so three identical Catmen surrounded the executioner. Nelda caught Daask in a cloud of daggers that tore into him again and again over the course of the fight. He took it as an affront to his masculinity, “pronounced sentence” on her, and buried his axe in her collarbone until she went down. Kip brought her back with cure wounds after binding himself, Wilbur, Nelda, and Masha together with an emboldening bond. Escher put an arrow straight through Daask’s nostril. Meanwhile, Cabba ran to Ellery’s side, and Ellery searched for Arghen. He had been left asleep under a sheet near the gallows and was now missing.

Khalor surveyed the scene and said quietly, “I thought he would follow me.” Wilbur sent a tiny mechanical bee buzzing into the dragon’s face, which broke his concentration. Khalor sneered at Masha’s “pretender of a dragon,” said, “Let me show you the breath of a real dragon,” and blasted it with fire, leaving it barely holding together. Ellery crossed the bridge and fired a Galick Gun at Khalor, and Kip slapped on his invisibility orb and vanished. Daask stepped over the fallen Nelda, spat on her, and promised to get to her in a minute. The last thing anyone saw was Wilbur’s silhouette set against the executioner as he struck.
