The group confronted the Bloodhowler, Eldon Reed, atop the lightning-struck tower in the in-between. Reed laid out his plan to use Wilbur’s tether to return to the physical world, kill the rest of the party, and continue his reign of terror. As green flames licked at Wilbur’s floating body, Ellery charged to tackle him to safety but was hurled back by the magical barrier. She answered with a massive beam of purple lightning that blasted through Reed, destroyed the lightning rod powering the ritual, and blew a hole in the tower wall. With the ritual broken, the flames around Wilbur faded and he dropped to the floor, saved. Nelda ended the fight by beheading the weakened Bloodhowler with his own glaive.
Back in the physical world, the group reunited with Wilbur, who said his experience had been terrifying and immediate, with no peaceful afterlife before Reed trapped him. Sylas revealed that this was his second time reaching into the in-between. His first attempt, to save another adventuring group, had been a complete failure in which no one survived. The group also noticed Arghen’s odd habit of sleeping soundly through major battles, and Ellery decided to carry him over her shoulder. Later, Escher visited Wilbur’s killer, Tobias Blackwood, in his cell. When Blackwood boasted about his connections and called Escher a coward, Escher calmly killed him with an inflict wounds spell, leaving a dried-out corpse behind.
The group settled into recovery. Wilbur discovered that his homunculus servant had triggered a “death protocol,” which included showing the FAM his farewell letters, much to his embarrassment. He also developed a sudden obsession with hibachi and arranged a special dinner. Kip stayed protective, constantly checking that Wilbur was still breathing. Nelda had an awkward conversation with Cedric Lightharbor Jr., who seemed to be flirting and asked to join their travels, which she clumsily deflected. Then Ellery woke up to find that her tail had completely grown back.
