Campaign: Campaign 2 · Session: 33 of 83 · Arc: Khalor and the Company at Sea · Where: Saline Coast; the wreck of the Sapphire Tide; a Velvet Truffle Company island

Arghen woke after sleeping for several days, disoriented and agitated. He immediately demanded that the group contact their “magic friend” to bring someone back from the dead, pointing at Wilbur as an example. Confused, the party explained that Wilbur was already alive, but Arghen said he didn’t mean Wilbur. He confessed that he felt responsible for the death of the “Prince of Bureetoe,” and that this old trauma was behind his demand. The group then prepared for the job they had accepted: recovering Kellem Stormforge’s family heirloom from the shipwreck. Stormforge described it as a black chest that glowed with benevolent energy, protected by steel and magic, lost when a large gold dragon attacked his ship.

The party found the wreck and located the chest. Just as they pulled it free, a massive gold dragon burst out of the wreckage. He said recovering the chest had been harder than he expected, thanked the group for their “help,” and lunged for it. Ellery hung on to the chest as the dragon tried to fly away, blasting him at point-blank range. The dragon answered with a roar that trapped Ellery in a harmless demiplane, then unleashed a massive wave of fire that brought down Kip and Nelda and left Escher badly hurt. Escher went to give Wilbur a healing potion, but Kip healed the whole group instead, everyone except the banished Ellery.

The dragon, now holding the chest, struck Arghen with a bolt of radiant energy and flew off. Defeated, the group realized the dragon had simply waited for someone else to do the hard work of recovering the chest. On Stormforge’s new boat, a tense and hangry Ellery argued with him and a surprisingly present chef. They followed the dragon’s flight path to an island dotted with ships, several of them belonging to the Velvet Truffle Company. Stormforge, worried his insurance wouldn’t kick in until the next day, refused to dock properly and dropped them a short way from shore, leaving them to row the rest of the way.
