History
The Obsidian Spire
Years ago, Bran, Sylas Riverstride, Victor Blackwood and Elara Sunshadow went looking for an “object that changes fate” at the Obsidian Spire, a dungeon said to hold something that could rewrite fate. The quest failed and Elara was lost. Sylas suspected Victor of pocketing the artifact.
The Whisper’s deal (Sessions 25–26)
In the Saline Coast Sewers, the Whisper offered the party information in exchange for help finding a powerful, fate-changing artifact he believed was hidden somewhere on the Saline Coast (Session 25). Bran told them Victor might have it.
In Session 26, the Whisper contacted Escher to demand the artifact. The party tracked down Victor, and after some persuasion from Nelda, he admitted to having it and handed it over, warning them not to open it.
What happened to the chest after that is unknown.
The other black chest
The chest Kellem Stormforge hired the party to recover from the wreck of the Sapphire Tide was also black, glowing with benevolent energy and protected by steel and magic. Khalor the Dreamreaper stole it in Session 33, and the VTC sent it to a “mistress.” Whether the two chests are connected is unknown.
