Quick facts
Campaign: Campaign 2 · Session: 31 of 83 · Arc: Death and the In-Between · Where: The In-Between
After his death, Wilbur found himself not in a peaceful afterlife but in a misty, ghostly realm called the in-between. He felt pulled toward a large tower lit by green flames. At the top, a shadowy, menacing figure waited. A lightning strike revealed it to be Eldon Reed, the Bloodhowler, whom Wilbur had killed. Reed explained that he had cursed his own killer to be brought here upon death, so he could take their “tether” back to the world of the living. He planned to take Wilbur’s tether, kill Wilbur’s friends when they came to save him, and have his revenge.
Meanwhile Ellery, Escher, Nelda, Kip, and Arghen arrived in the same misty realm. It was disorienting, full of misty silhouettes instead of solid objects, with no sun or stars in the sky. They met strange things there, including a singing woman who burst into mist when startled, and found that Kip had three shadows that didn’t move in sync with him. Arghen spotted the distant tower being struck by lightning again and again, and the group saw a large shadowy figure at the top. That was where they needed to go.
At the tower they had to solve a series of puzzles. In one room, six magical orbs showed different reflections, and they found that the correct one revealed glowing tethers linking them to an upper level. In the next chamber, a skeletal gambler made them “ante” personal memories and skills to play a card game for the right to pass. Each of them gave up something dear:
- Escher lost his memories of his home.
- Kip gave up his memories of his fiancée.
- Arghen lost his last memory of his mother.
- Ellery gave up her memories of, and the very concept of, Saiyan pride.
Having paid the price and finally won, they climbed to find Wilbur’s motionless form floating inside a ring of fire, watched over by the shadow of Eldon Reed, who declared they were too late.
