Mind Flayers are a purple-skinned psionic race. The only one The FAM has met is the Whisper, who called himself the last of his kind.
What is known
Everything the party knows about Mind Flayers comes from the Whisper.
- A destroyed people. The Whisper told Ellery and Escher that he was the last of his kind, his people wiped out by the tyrant Frieza, the same one responsible for destroying Ellery’s home planet. In North City he accused Prince Vegeta of executing his race, and Vegeta did not deny it.
- Disguise. The Whisper went about as a creepy old man for most of his time with the party, and only dropped the human illusion in the Cackler Barrel to reveal his true form: an imposing, purple-skinned Mind Flayer.
- Telepathy. He spoke into Escher’s mind long before the party met him, calling him “friend” and urging him to come forward, and later sent a psychic message to Nelda to say he was rescinding his help.
- Domination. In the fight with Vegeta he tried to magically dominate Escher’s mind and failed.
- Brain-eating. At CAGS he tried to devour Reese’s brain. Only Sophie’s protective arcane ward saved him.
- Plane-walking. The Whisper fled the fight with Vegeta by plane shift. When he tried it again at the Academy, Belle Pepper countered the spell and kept him grounded.
The Whisper died on the floor of the Academy, apologizing to a figure named Quixiokotle. Among the hoard in his astral lockbox the Cacklers found a Ring of Mind Shielding.
