Quick facts
Campaign: Campaign 2 · Session: 1 of 83 · Arc: The Festival Conspiracy · Where: Saline Coast, Saline Splendor Festival
Kip (full name Kiplivarian Milo Evari Jaspern Oakhart) arrived at the Saline Coast in a turnip wagon with his uncle, Elby Thistletop. Men claiming to be toll collectors blocked the way and demanded ten gold pieces and half his load of turnips. Kip, ever the bureaucrat, asked for a receipt for his accountant. The men laughed it off, saying they “are not ones for paperwork.” It was a fitting welcome to a corrupt and unfriendly city.
Others were arriving for the Saline Splendor Festival at the same time. Ellery, a Saiyan monk, passed through customs with ease. A young man named Escher wandered in and used a minor illusion to put a spider on someone’s arm so they dropped their drink.
Meanwhile Wilbur, a purveyor of “oddities, trinkets, odds and ends, bits and bobs,” finished selling a custom smoke-and-noise ball called the “Scarecrow,” designed to scare off birds. He spotted Kip struggling with his remaining turnips and offered to help. Wilbur already knew about the crooked “toll collectors” and had avoided them by taking another route into the city. He warned Kip about the “bad clans” that will “steal everything you got.” The two struck up a friendly trade: some of Wilbur’s magical light pebbles for turnips. Wilbur proudly showed off his other inventions, including metal flowers that never die and toy “lightswords” that make a copyrighted sound.
The festive mood ended when three wolves escaped from a nearby zoo enclosure and sent festival-goers running. The newly met group sprang into action. Kip grabbed one of Wilbur’s toy lightswords and, to everyone’s surprise, sliced a wolf’s jugular with it. Ellery was knocked out in the chaos, and Kip revived her with a healing word.
Suspecting foul play, the group investigated the zoo. A distraught zookeeper told them the wolves had been drugged, and that another employee, Felix, was supposed to be on watch but had disappeared. The group concluded the escape was probably a planned distraction and set off for the artisan district to find Felix.
