Quick facts
Type: Inn and tavern · Location: Saline Coast · Owner: Bran · Status: Raided by the VTC (C2 Session 83)
The Mercenary’s Rest is an inn on the Saline Coast that caters to adventurers. Its owner, Bran, is a retired adventurer, and the inn was The FAM’s home base for most of their time in the city.
Overview
The inn offers sturdy beds, hearty meals and secure storage for valuables, and it keeps a bulletin board for hiring mercenaries. A Cackler Barrel restaurant is nearby. By Session 83, a tree grew in the middle of the tavern.
History
- Session 2: After tracking down Felix, the group met up here. Kip ordered a special chocolate milk, Escher tried to buy whiskey despite looking young, and one patron declared Ellery’s tail “not of God.”
- Session 5: Bran greeted the group and gave the party a list of local shops, and Kip walked Ellery to the Cackler Barrel to show her a picture that might be Kakarot.
- Session 9: After her father cut her off, Nelda was offered a place to stay here.
- Session 12–13: Wilbur brought the kidnapped mayor here. When guards searched the taverns for the prison escapees, Ellery jumped out a window into a wagon, Escher hid Nelda in a closet, Kip hid under the bed, and Wilbur disguised himself as an old halfling woman and fooled the guard.
- Session 25: Nelda gave a concert in disguise, got so into it that she didn’t notice the disguise had dropped, and met a fan who turned out to be Cedric Lightharbor Jr.
- Session 28: Arghen was at the Mercenary’s Rest when the party got there and joined them.
- Session 45: Mira Jolip of the Coast Chronicle burst in looking for an interview.
- Session 47–48: As Nelda played a song at Bran’s request, a red devil walked in with the Golden Bagpipes and challenged her to a duel for her soul. She won.
- Session 57: A dejected Catman told the party here that he was losing the election.
- Session 83: The party retreated here after the gallows fight. The inn had been quiet because Bran hadn’t been around. They found Bran on his knees crying into the waist of Elara Sunshadow, and Sylas Riverstride stepped out of the tree to embrace her. Then a brick wrapped in a VTC poster came through the window and a voice outside shouted, “Fellowship, we know you’re in there. Come out with your hands up.” Bran and his old companions went out to fight, and the party heard Bran order “you motherfuckers” off his property while the FAM slipped away.
