Dr. Gero is a mad scientist who worked for the Rose Ribbon Army. His notes revealed that Greene was grown in his lab, and his creations 17 and 18 turned on him. Twenty years later he came back for revenge on Greene and blew himself up in North City.

History

Parmesan Diego

Gero is a member of the What Has Science Done Institute, like Dr. Briefs and Dr. Wheelo. While the party was in Parmesan Diego, he met with the Institute to try to fold the city into The Calyx.

Grimscale Tower

Following the Star Orb signal in Rice Town, the Cacklers fought their way down beneath Grimscale Tower and broke into a cluttered office. In a false compartment they found Gero’s personal notes and diary, along with a stasis pod holding a humanoid body labeled “17.” The notes said several color-coded operatives, including Cyan, Scarlet and Indigo, had been “forcibly relieved of their organic life” as “unsuccessful donor[s] for project Cyborg” and “refitted for other constructions.”

The notes also confirmed that Greene was a genetically engineered test subject grown from “synthetic DNA templates,” and that his memories of absent parents, kitchen work, military training and combat were fabricated. Terra Misu Umber asked, “So, Dr. Gero is your dad?”

Past the office was a factory where “Androids and other automatons and machines are created,” guarded by a dome-shaped automaton with the number 13 on its chest. Greene felt an ominous sense of déjà vu there.

On the run

After the party destroyed the dragon-control machine, 17 and 18 appeared, bickering about the “coward” Gero, who had fled. They told the party he had gone to Muscle Tower and took his journal in exchange. Dr. Briefs later reported that Gero was on the run again, having fled Muscle Tower too because his own creations wanted to kill him.

Revenge

In Campaign 1.5, Gero and Android 19 attacked North City, blowing up buildings. Gero told Greene he was there to enact his revenge: “Twenty long, grueling years I’ve waited. You destroyed everything I worked for. You picked the wrong side.” Greene’s Power Pole crashed through his chest in a burst of radiant energy. Gero’s body went limp, then his eyes lit back up, and he grabbed Greene and pulled him close. “I was your greatest creation,” Greene told him. “Now I take you with me,” Gero answered, and blew himself up. Greene survived the explosion (C1.5 Chapter 01).

Another of his creations outlived him. Perfect Cell woke after about twenty years and called Gero “the doctor” (C1.5 Chapter 02).
